On hooks…

Posted by: zammy on: May 7, 2009

I’m still on the look-out for crochet hooks of different sizes and materials.  I really want to buy bamboo and plastic crochet hooks. I read that they can be bought cheaply in Quiapo but being an overprotected teenager with no sense of direction whatsoever, I’m not sure if I could travel all the way there just to buy hooks. So I’m still looking for more accessible craft stores from where I live. The only accessible places where I can buy hooks are SM North Edsa & Trinoma (because they’re near UP) and Dreams Needlearts & Crafts in Robinson’s Metro East (one of the malls that I pass through on the way home to Taytay).

Here are the crochet hooks that I’ve bought since I started crocheting last March:

my current hook collection

The first hook I ever bought was the one sold in National Bookstore, a size 7 (0.95mm) steel crochet hook since I didn’t know where to find other hooks here in the Philippines. It was worth around P12. I have two steel crochet hooks now, the other one is sized 9 which I bought in SM North Edsa Dept. Store for around P25. Dreams also sell steel hooks for P30 each.

Most of these hooks were bought from Dreams because it’s the nearest craft store I can find. The double-ended Japanese hooks costs P75 each. I almost have all the sizes except for the smallest (2/0) and the largest (10/0).  I bought these even before I found out that the department store in SM North Edsa sells sewing materials. Eventually, I found out that the hooks costs P40 each, almost half of the price from Dreams!Japanese Crochet Hooks

The other day, I was able to satisfy my curiosity over Craft World in SM Megamall. I read in blogs that they sell imported hooks and yarns and I wanted to see this store. When I got there, I bought the two biggest hook that I could find, the Susan Bates size K/10.5 (6.5mm) aluminum hook and an Inox 6.0 mm aluminum hook. I also wanted to buy a Susan Bates size H/8 (5.omm) hook, yarn needles and probably a pair of knitting needles but I was out of funds (I don’t have a big allowance, still a student). What I was really looking for was an I/9 (5.5mm) hook but  I’m looking forward to the next time I get back there.

I’m also thinking of saving money to buy those awesome bamboo crochet hooks that I saw on ebay… I think it’s worth around $12 but I know that the shipping fee will murder me… But I really want it and I’ll buy it someday 0r, I’ll finally go to Quiapo… don’t know when that’ll be…

*Sorry for the crappy pictures… I’m having trouble with my camera…
